Addiction and cannabis psychosis

Psychosis risk higher in cannabis users with AKT1 gene

A specific gene has been identified as an indicator of a persons disposition to incur permanent psychosis.

The gene (AKT1) is present in approximately half of the population and the study, published in the journal Translational Psychiatry, reports that those with the gene are more likely to experience Paranoia, as well as other symptoms of psychosis from Cannabis use, regardless of their physical state.

Although the study looks specifically at genetic disposition, it is also interesting to note that the manipulation of strains that have produced a much more powerful drug, has meant that more people are coming forward and requesting help with this being their primary substance.
